Shrewsbury
I have approximately a year of 'official' care work, however my previous roles have consisted of looking after 100+ children in an educational after school setting; helping people around historic sites; and helping women who were on probation.
I would consider myself a highly compassionate and empathetic person. Whilst I wasn't working (maternity leave) I gained my Level 2 Counselling Skills with Hereford College. Once I started work again, I entered into the care sector and have since looked after 3 young men living with autism, 2 young women living with cerebal palsy and 2 older women living with schizophrenia.
This has involved (minimal) personal care, and the focus has been centered more about their wellbeing and enjoyment - taking them for days out, to activity days, teaching them independent living skills, as well as helping with these too, ie. cooking, cleaning, laundry etc, also helping them to understand and manage their finances/personal budgets.
I'm a great listener and am very open and non judgemental.
I'm currently studying an MA in Celtic Studies and absolutely love Celtic History, myth, legend and folklore - especially Arthurian tales. I love all forms of communication, and find spending the time to write a good letter or email really satisfying; the same with endless hours having a good chat with an old friend on the phone brings me much enjoyment.
I enjoy walking and hiking, but equally I love having some tea and cake in a cafe after a browse around some charity shops. I enjoy reading non-fiction and inspirational books such as Eckhart Tolle's 'A New Earth' or Sharon Blackie's 'If Women Rose Rooted'.
I'm a strong advocate for women's empowerment and have previously volunteered with Maternity Voices, to give new mothers a voice and a chance to express their feelings about what went well/didn't with the birth of their new child.
I am in the tentative planning stages of hosting women's and mother's circles, where safe space will be offered to those wishing to talk about what's going on in their life at the moment, free of judgement.
